In Sedona, Arizona, nature did something no sculptor could have planned: it carved the perfect silhouette of Snoopy into red sandstone. The famous Peanuts beagle appears there, lying on his back atop his doghouse, with his little friend Woodstock perched on his nose, exactly as Charles M. Schulz drew him for decades.
From downtown Sedona, walking among the shops and restaurants along Route 89A, anyone can look up and find it. It doesn’t take much effort: the formation is so true to the character that the resemblance is almost impossible to ignore. For those who want to get closer, the Marg’s Draw Trail —with access from Sombart Lane— offers an out-and-back route of between 2 and 3 miles with panoramic views of the red rocks that make the hike worth every step.
There is something genuinely moving about knowing that this landscape has been there for millions of years and that, at some point, someone looked up and saw Snoopy resting forever on the mountains of Arizona.
