The pelican has no filter. It sees something roughly the size of a fish and acts first, thinks later.
Its beak is soft and it can’t chew anything, so every attempt at eating ends in either swallowing it whole or not at all. The problem is that it decides whether the prey fits or not AFTER it has caught it, when it’s already too late to spit it back out. That’s why there are documented cases of pelicans trying to swallow balls, bottles, and fish that clearly don’t fit, all driven by that instinct of “if it moves, it’s food” that can’t distinguish between a sardine and a floating object.
The result can be funny to watch, but it’s also risky for the bird: trying to swallow something too large can cause choking or internal injuries. So the next time you see a pelican struggling with something impossible in its bill, you already know: it’s not clumsiness, it’s pure miscalculated ambition.
