The boy from the ‘Success Kid’ meme raised more than $93,000 for his dad’s kidney transplant

Sam Griner was just two years old when his mom took a photo of him at the beach: fist clenched, determined look. That image became the ‘Success Kid’ meme, one of the most widely used on the internet to celebrate small victories. Years later, Sam is eight, and that same viral fame is doing something much more important: saving his dad’s life. 💙

Justin Griner has spent years battling kidney disease. He suffered total kidney failure in 2009 and since then has depended on dialysis to survive. His mother died from the same disease. The family launched a campaign to raise the $75,000 they needed to cover the transplant and follow-up care — and in less than a week they surpassed $93,000 in donations.

Sam’s mom admitted that at first she hesitated to use her son’s image to ask for money. But in the end she understood: “If anyone knows the power and generosity of the internet, it’s us”. The family is also looking for compatible kidney donors. Sometimes, the best victory doesn’t fit in a meme — but it does fit in the generosity of thousands of strangers.
