Ya Ya, a giant panda that lived for 20 years at the Memphis Zoo, in the United States, returned to China amid intense controversy over her physical condition. Videos shared on social media showed the animal very thin and with hair loss, which sparked concern and criticism internationally.

After her return in 2023, the panda was transferred to the Beijing Zoo, where she received special care and treatment for skin problems. According to Chinese authorities, Ya Ya, who arrived weighing close to 75 kilos, reached 95, in addition to showing thicker and shinier fur, demonstrating her recovery and improved state of health

The Memphis Zoo said that the panda’s appearance was due to a chronic condition related to her skin and fur, and denied that she had suffered neglect or mistreatment.
