In March 2021, an ultrasound of a baby who had not yet been born began attracting attention online for a curious reason. Hannah Hodgson, a 36-year-old woman from Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, was seven months pregnant with her son Ollie when she shared an image from the scan. She was focused on looking at the baby and hadn’t noticed anything unusual.

It was her friends who began pointing out a detail in the photograph. Beside the little one, a figure seemed to appear with a shape reminiscent of the Honey Monster, the yellow character from the well-known British cereal brand. At first Hannah hadn’t been able to see it, but after they pointed it out, the resemblance also became obvious to her.

““Now that we know it’s there, we can’t stop seeing the Honey Monster”,” Hannah said. The image ended up circulating widely online and was shared about 10.000 times. The curious coincidence led many people to look at the ultrasound not only to see the baby, but also to find the distinctive figure appearing beside him.

But for Hannah and her husband, Adam, that image held a much deeper meaning than a simple optical illusion. Ollie was especially long-awaited after Hannah had suffered three miscarriages over the previous three years. That’s why the couple referred to him as their “miracle baby”.
The ultrasound was taken when the pregnancy was already well advanced, and everything seemed to be on track for them to finally meet their son. The image ended up becoming an even more unique keepsake: it not only captured Ollie before his birth, but also a coincidence his parents probably never looked at in quite the same way again.
The story went viral precisely because of that unusual combination: a prenatal image that seemed to hide a familiar character and, behind it, the story of a couple who had waited for years to have their baby.
