A month ago, Vozinha passed through that same airport and nobody turned their head. A 40-year-old goalkeeper, from Portugal’s second division, on his way to his first World Cup. Carry-on luggage and dreams to spare.

Yesterday he returned and an entire country was waiting for him.
Now comes the strangest part of glory: returning to ordinary life. We have to imagine him next week, buying bread in Mindelo, with the whole line asking him for photos. Walking the streets where nobody used to greet him, now unable to go ten meters without a hug. The children who once shouted the names of European stars will shout his, that nickname that smells like home: granny.
He will also return to his modest club, to training sessions without cameras, to saving shots that nobody will see. And there the final test will be waiting: the gloves are the same, the goal is the same size. What changed is everything else.
But something tells us fame will not get the better of him. The man who has always written on his Instagram, “never forget who you are or where you come from”, does not need to be reminded. He was anonymous for forty years: he knows by heart the way back to simplicity.
He left down that runway as an unknown man. He came back as the face of a country.
And the most beautiful thing: Vozinha is still exactly the same.
