This three-year-old beagle lives in Brisbane, Australia, with her sister Jada. One Monday night, around 8pm, her owners noticed that an entire bag of jelly candies was missing —those snake-shaped gummies so popular in Australia— and rushed both dogs to Animal Emergency Service Jindalee.
That is where the investigation began. Dr. Cordelia Edwards and her team did not know which of the two was the culprit until they weighed Scooter: she had 1,1 kilos extra, practically the exact weight of the missing bag. The case was solved. Jada, meanwhile, turned out to be almost completely innocent: she had only eaten one gummy.
They induced vomiting under supervision and confirmed that the gummies did not contain xylitol, the sweetener that is lethal to dogs. Both returned home healthy, although a Brisbane veterinarian summed it all up with a perfect phrase: the beagle clearly regretted nothing.
