It starts out the size of a pear and ends up becoming an organ so large that it reaches the rib cage. In nine months, the uterus undergoes one of the most extreme transformations in human biology: it expands upward from the pelvis, literally displacing the rest of the organs to make room for itself.
That process of relocation is more radical than it seems. The stomach, intestines, diaphragm, and bladder are pushed to the sides or compressed to give up space. That is why many women feel intense heartburn, pressure in the ribs, or a frequent need to urinate: it is not an isolated symptom, it is the direct result of an entire organ reorganizing the body’s internal architecture.
Within that redesigned space, the baby, the placenta, and the amniotic fluid coexist. The body’s ability to coordinate all of this simultaneously, without external instructions and in real time, is possibly the most sophisticated phenomenon that occurs in human nature.
