The X-ray that shows why a simple grape can be as dangerous as a coin in the throat of a 5-year-old child

It shows something that seems impossible: a whole grape lodged in the upper part of a 5-year-old child’s airway.

Angela Henderson, the Australian blogger behind Finlee and Me, shared it in April 2017 after a pediatrician sent it to her with the child’s mother’s permission, determined that no parent should learn about this risk too late.

The child had to undergo surgery under general anesthesia to remove the fruit.

He was lucky: part of his airway remained open, and that prevented a tragedy.

Pediatricians insist on one simple thing that changes everything: cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters before giving them to young children.

The diameter of their throat is almost the same as that of a whole grape.
