Sofía was 11 when her heart stopped in the middle of a celebration with friends.
She lived in Tandil, Argentina, and had long QT syndrome, a congenital heart condition. She was transferred to Hospital Italiano, where she was hospitalized for 23 days. The neurological damage was irreversible, although she never progressed to brain death. There, her parents made the most difficult decision: not to prolong invasive measures and to donate her organs.
“The hardest part for us was disconnecting”, her mother, Eugenia Miramont, said. Sofía’s kidneys and liver went to three children. On Donor Person Day, Eugenia found in that decision a different way to move through grief: “It helps me heal from this pain, because knowing that other lives exist thanks to your daughter helps you heal”.
