Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen are 77 years old. In September 2026, they were arrested in Dublin, California, in connection with the death of their 40-year-old son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey.

According to prosecutors, the couple waited for him in the parking lot of the city’s sports fields. Witnesses reportedly saw the two grandparents take turns shooting, and both were arrested shortly afterward. They face murder charges, with the special circumstance of an ambush, which could mean life in prison without the possibility of parole if they are convicted.
The attack took place amid a divorce and a child custody dispute between McKinsey and his estranged wife. The case had a history of family conflict and mutual accusations of abuse. McKinsey, who was transgender, had also reported abuse by his wife and in-laws because of his gender identity. The investigation is ongoing.
