It was about 35 degrees in a restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, and Melanie Dudley was breastfeeding her baby.
She was on vacation with her whole family. She had already used the nursing cover, but it was so hot that the baby was sweating. She took it off.
That was when a man came over and asked her to cover up.
Melanie, a homemaker from Austin, Texas, and mother of three, was speechless. She didn’t yell. She didn’t get up from the table. She didn’t give any explanation.

She asked her husband for the nursing cover. Then she put it over her head.
He took the photo. He sent it to his mother, and from there it reached Carol Lockwood, a woman who didn’t even know Melanie and who wrote that she was tired of seeing mothers shamed for feeding their children.
She posted it on July 30, 2018. It was shared more than 200.000 times.
Melanie later said it wasn’t a fight or anything serious. It was a spontaneous reaction. No speech, no sign.
Sometimes the biggest response fits in a piece of cloth.
