No one wanted to play with Evita Delmundo during recess.
She had hairy moles all over her face and body, and a birthmark that covered her neck and shoulders. At her school in Malaysia, they called her “monster” or “chocolate cookie”, and she spent recess alone. At 16, she asked doctors to remove the marks, but they explained that there were too many and that operating on them would be dangerous. The moles would stay forever.
What changed was not her skin, but her. At a church camp that same year, she learned to see herself differently. “I accepted that this is the body I was given, and I am grateful I never changed anything”, she says today, at 20, while working at a cat café that is also an animal shelter.
Today, she has more than 133.000 followers on Instagram who call her their idol. She still dreams of the beauty crown, not to hide what made her different, but to show it with her head held high.
