Kingsley was born in January 2022 with half of his face covered by a birthmark.
His mother, 33-year-old Brooke Atkins, originally from Gold Coast, Australia, noticed something more serious behind the mark. A diagnosis of Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare neurological disorder linked to seizures, as well as glaucoma, came because the birthmark reached the child’s eye. Doctors at Queensland Children’s Hospital recommended pulsed-dye laser sessions, a procedure that does not seek to erase the mark but rather to stop skin damage and prevent further complications.
When Brooke shared the treatment on TikTok, the response was not empathy but fury. They called her a ‘monster’ and a ‘brainwashed’ mother for subjecting her son to something many interpreted as a cosmetic whim. She responded by explaining the science behind each session, while facing a reality the trolls completely ignored: Kingsley’s health, not his appearance, was at stake.
