Her name was Stefani Germanotta, and she studied singing and piano at New York’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Some classmates thought she was arrogant. That she dreamed too big. That a girl who sang in small Manhattan bars had no right to think of herself as a star.
So they created a Facebook group. They gave it a straightforward name: “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous”. Inside, they uploaded photos and videos making fun of her, her clothes, and her ambitions.
The group had just twelve members. Twelve people were enough to try to convince a young woman that her dream was ridiculous.
Stefani left university shortly afterward to dedicate herself to music. The rest is known by half the world: Lady Gaga, an Oscar, several Grammys, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA.
In 2024, those screenshots began circulating again, this time on TikTok, alongside the complete list of her awards. She saw them and responded without rancor: “This is why you can’t give up when people doubt you or look down on you. You have to keep going”.
She didn’t need to respond with insults. It was enough for her to keep living her life.
Twelve people tried to erase her dream. The whole world ended up learning her name.
