The ashes were already at home. The condolence card was too. Nicci Knight, a resident of Newby, North Yorkshire, had even received an official cremation certificate for her cat Ted while she was still on vacation in Turkey with her husband and their four children. For everyone, the case was closed.
Four days after the cremation, Ted came in through the cat flap of his own home. Just like that, no drama. Caregiver Elise Garbutt, who had been the one to find a dead cat that looked like Ted and organize the whole process, thought she was seeing a ghost. Knight did not believe any of it until they put her on a FaceTime video call and she saw him moving in real time.
The crematorium had mistakenly cremated another cat—probably a stray—that physically resembled hers. The manager of the place donated the cost of the service, about 169 dollars, to a local cat shelter in honor of the unnamed animal. Ted, for his part, immediately went back to his routine: wandering around the neighborhood as if he had never died. 🐱
