Wang Xiao was 24 years old and had a diagnosis that offered no mercy: uremia, with no compatible donor in her family, and one year to live if a kidney did not arrive in time.
Rather than give up, she wrote an unusual ad in a support group for cancer patients. She was looking for a man willing to marry her and, if he died first, donate a kidney to her.
Yu Jianping, also ill with cancer and with the same blood type, responded. He accepted the deal. “I will take care of you as best I can after we get married”, Wang promised, according to the South China Morning Post.
They got married knowing that either of them could die first. They did not live together or combine their finances. But they began accompanying each other to every appointment, every treatment, every piece of bad news.
What began as a survival pact turned into something else. Wang insisted that Yu not give up. He did the same for her. Over time, neither of them needed the other’s kidney anymore: they both improved.
Today they are still together, married for love and not because of a deal. The story inspired the Chinese film Viva La Vida, which won eleven awards in 2024.
Sometimes life offers a desperate deal and, without being asked, delivers something much greater.
