What seemed to be one of the season’s most elegant and comfortable garments ended up becoming an unexpected viral phenomenon. On TikTok, hundreds of videos began racking up millions of views showing women tripping, falling to the ground, or having accidents while wearing the same Zara pants model. On social media, they were quickly given a nickname: “the killer pants”.
According to the users themselves, the problem lies in the design. The hem is very long, the legs are extremely wide, and the fabric is so flowy that, when walking, it can get caught under a shoe or tangled with the other leg. The result, many say, has been ending up face-first on the street, on stairs, or even on escalators.
Some women shared pictures of bloodied knees, bruised arms, and even said they had suffered fractures after the falls. The videos multiplied under hashtags such as #DeadlyZaraPants and #ZaraDeathPants, turning the garment into one of the most talked-about topics of recent weeks.
Despite the controversy, many admit they continue wearing the pants because they love how they look. The solution several found was to hem them or shorten the hem to avoid further accidents.
So far, Zara has neither withdrawn the product nor issued a statement about the controversy. There is also no official warning about the garment. However, the number of testimonies has been enough for media outlets in different countries to pick up the story and spark debate over whether a design can be as attractive as it is impractical.
Because sometimes, fashion’s greatest risk is not breaking the rules… but tripping over them.
