Thaynara Marcondes was 21 years old when her body began to change in a way no one knew how to explain.
It was her aunt who noticed first: the breasts of the education student in Mandirituba, Brazil, grew by almost 750 grams each month. No stopping. No apparent cause.
Doctors ruled out a tumor, but never found the source of the problem. Over time, each breast came to weigh nearly 5 kilos—together, more than 10 kilos of tissue that her back was not designed to support.
She could no longer wear regular bras or standard-size clothing.
The pain in her neck, shoulders, and back became so intense that, on her worst days, she needed a wheelchair to get around. In her work with young children, holding them in her arms became an almost impossible task.
The condition is called gigantomastia, and it is as rare as it is cruel: the body grows, but no one knows why it stops or whether it will. With the help of donations, Thaynara raised about 8.000 dollars for surgery that lasted more than 10 hours and gave her back the body she had lost.
