Nobody expected a dog to win an election in New Delhi.
It all started on Thursday, September 24, when the Fat Dogs of Delhi Instagram account launched a tournament to crown the fattest stray dog in the Indian capital. There were 64 contenders, all street dogs, and each one is competing for a place in the knockout rounds through polls that last 24 hours.
People took it very seriously. Thousands of internet users are voting in virtual polls, and some have launched humorous election campaigns to support their favorite, slogans and all, as if it were a real election.
But the tournament isn’t all laughs. It comes amid a debate about the presence of stray dogs in the Indian capital, an issue that divides opinion in the city. This debate adds to the complexity of a dog—or any animal, for that matter—being this fat.
