David Owori was 28 years old and captain of SC Villa, Uganda’s most successful club.
On the night of 4 August, he was walking home in Makindye, a suburb of Kampala, when he was ambushed and robbed of his phone. He was struck with a stone. His friend and former teammate Nicholas Kabonge took him to the hospital while he was still conscious, but his injuries were too severe. He died the following day at Case clinic.
A week later, police tracked his iPhone and reached two suspects in a network dedicated to mobile phone theft in the capital. During the operation, they found four bags containing more than 140 devices: 80 iPhones, 40 Samsung phones and dozens of other devices.
