Dulce and Batata were going to end up like so many other horses: discarded, slaughtered, treated as merchandise. A man from the family group that exploited them in Corralitos, Guaymallén, tried to hide them on a neighboring property as soon as he saw the Police arriving. He did not succeed.
The case had begun earlier: months ago, 19 horses had already been rescued from the same clandestine slaughter network. Now, Mendoza’s Third Court of Guarantees sentenced the person responsible to an effective prison term, barred him for two years from owning and handling animals, and ordered the permanent confiscation of the two mares. Their custody was placed in the hands of PEMPA, the organization that fought for them.
Lawyer Jerónimo Allende, co-founder of PEMPA, stressed that the ruling goes far beyond the criminal conviction: for the first time, Argentine justice recognized Dulce and Batata as sentient beings and subjects of rights, not as objects that someone can use and discard at will. Is this precedent enough to change how we treat other animals?
