Andrew was 10 years old and had already been through 25 foster homes when he arrived at the Gills’ home in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2018. Joc, his schoolmate, lived there, and something neither of them expected was born over games of Minecraft: a friendship that felt like brotherhood.
Andrew stayed in that home for only a few months before he had to leave. But he and Joc remained inseparable. When a second attempt at adoption with another family also fell through, Kevin and Dominique Gill decided they didn’t want to see him leave again and asked if he wanted to stay with them forever. Andrew said yes without thinking twice.
Two years after that first meeting in front of a screen, the adoption became official.
