“They only buy it to take a photo and throw it away”: Influencers who bought Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccino and threw it away full are criticized

They buy it, pose, and throw it away. That’s how simple the scene is that repeats itself in front of Los Angeles’s famous pink wall.

Starbucks brought back the Unicorn Frappuccino this August, the drink that became an Instagram phenomenon in 2017 because of its pink and blue colors.

The brand sold more than 2 million units in just one weekend in North America, and August 15 was the best sales Saturday in the history of its company-owned stores in the region.

But several videos show what happens after the photo: completely full cups ending up directly in the trash, without anyone having taken a single sip.

Users on social media have already dubbed it “performative LA”, and the scene has reopened an uncomfortable question: how much food is wasted just so a drink looks good on your feed?
