Maggie’s jaw was broken, one of her ears was cut off, and her eyes were deliberately destroyed, leaving her permanently blind. She was pregnant when they found her lying there, barely alive, with no one stopping to help her. A desperate post on social media reached London, where a woman contacted The Wild At Heart Foundation. That chain of strangers was the only thing that saved her.
Four infected bullets were removed from her body. She was taken to the United Kingdom, underwent surgery, and 25-year-old Kasey Carlin adopted her in Brighton, England. Maggie learned to move around without seeing, and to trust human hands again after they had caused her so much harm.
Today she visits hospitals, schools, and nursing homes as a certified therapy dog. No one was held accountable for shooting her. But more than 520,000 people follow her story on Instagram (@maggiethewunderdog), and she continues to teach something her attackers never understood: that harm does not have the final word.
