Katrina Blancaflor left the kitchens of famous restaurants in Chicago and Las Vegas to raise her two children.
But she never stopped baking. At home, she perfected her sourdough until she dreamed of something simple: a bread stand at the entrance to her home for the neighbors. Her husband spent weeks building it by hand. The night before its inauguration, someone put it on the roof of a pickup truck and disappeared with it.
Among the comments on her social media post was John Adams, the owner of a local carpentry shop who had never spoken with the family. Alongside his son Casey, he requested the original plans and worked 12 hours straight to replicate the exact stand, down to the wheels. He delivered it to her doorstep days later, without accepting a cent. “It surprised me so much that it literally made me cry”, says Katrina. The only thing Adams receives in return is fresh bread every week.
