When the creator of the comedy Benidorm fought to hire her, ITV executives were blunt: “She’s not famous enough.” That wasn’t a criticism of her talent.
It was a locked door. Then Ted Lasso came along. And with the series came Rebecca Welton, a character so complicated and so human that the industry had no choice but to notice her.
In 2021, at 47, Hannah Waddingham won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso.
When she took the stage, she didn’t talk about herself. She spoke about those who had been waiting years for an opportunity. “West End musical theatre performers deserve more space on screen. Please give them a chance, because we won’t let you down”, she said during her speech.
Today she is 51. She has shared the screen with major stars, was one of the Eurovision presenters, and has become one of the most recognizable faces on British television.
When asked about her apparent overnight success, she replied with a phrase that sums up a lifetime of perseverance: “An overnight success after 25 years? Delicious”.
Some dreams don’t arrive late. They arrive exactly when the person is ready to hold them.
