Alexandra Adams, 32, was registered at birth as deafblind in Kent, United Kingdom. She also lives with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic condition that has led to lengthy hospital stays.
During the pandemic, she spent 17 months hospitalized and had to put her medical studies on hold for two and a half years.
Before considering becoming a doctor, she dreamed of swimming for Great Britain’s Paralympic team at London 2012. That dream did not come true, but she did not give up: she changed her goal and pursued medicine for more than a decade, training first in Wales and then at Northeastern University London.
This week, she graduated with two degrees at once: Medicine and a master’s degree in Creative Writing.
To examine her patients, she uses a Bluetooth stethoscope connected to her hearing aids, a detail she showed herself on TikTok and which has already amassed nearly 3 million views.
Today, she is officially the first deafblind doctor in the entire United Kingdom, and she uses her story to remind you that no diagnosis should determine your future.
