The wedding went as they had hoped, but when it was time to pay, problems began. And what was supposed to be the start of a life together ended up separating them. 😳

In March 2026, Leo and Hellen got married in a village in the Lira District of Uganda. To finance the celebration, he took out a loan of 500.000 Ugandan shillings from a community savings association and put up a plot of land as collateral. He agreed to repay the money within a month, along with an additional 150.000 shillings in interest.

However, he never made a single payment, and the debt kept growing until it reached 1,25 million shillings in September. Facing pressure from his creditors and afraid of being arrested, Leo left the village in May. Two months later, Hellen returned to live with her family.

The story became even more complicated when the lenders tried to repossess the land that had been put up as collateral and discovered that Leo had already leased it to someone else.

According to Michael Odongo, Hellen’s brother and a local official, his sister returned home while her husband remained missing. The wedding they had financed with that loan not only left them in debt, but also brought their marriage to an end.
