José Luis de la Quintana does not look for excuses.
He has been the president, coach and soul of Alto Perú, a club in Uruguay’s C division, for 30 years. And since July 20, 2019, when his team thrashed Artigas 5-2 away from home, it has not won a single match again: 76 games without a victory, with 14 draws and 62 defeats.
Anyone would think he has had enough. But he sees it differently: “If there is something in your home that does not work, do you leave or do you stay? You must not give up; it is a matter of mentality”, he said. He talks about his players, those boys who make 20.000 trips just to get to training, and about values that, according to him, the press never highlights.
There are no trophies in his display case, but there is something harder to achieve: pure loyalty to a place he chose not to abandon.
