They wanted to bring life back to the sacred images of the Monument of the Calvary of Jesus, in Carmo do Cajuru, Minas Gerais, Brazil. What they ended up doing was something very different. 😬

The Virgin and Christ appeared repainted with defined eyebrows, eyelashes, bright red lips, and eyes that ended up completely crooked. The photos went viral within hours, and the neighbors were quick to compare them to the now legendary “Ecce Homo” of Borja, Spain — that Christ repainting from 2012 that became a worldwide meme. “They painted Jesus’ eyes all crooked”, wrote an outraged neighbor on social media. 🎨😲

The Parish Council of Nossa Senhora Aparecida acknowledged the scandal and that same afternoon removed the paint from the faces. It is now looking for a restoration specialist to repair the damage. The city government, for its part, clarified that it neither hired nor authorized any work. Someone picked up a paintbrush… and clearly should not have done it. 🖌️
