They were headed straight to the pet store. They already had a cute puppy in mind, one of those sold in a display window. But the girl, with her red cap and attentive gaze, saw another dog before they arrived: a big, stray dog, standing alone next to a door.
She did not hesitate. She walked over, sat beside him, and hugged him as if she had known him all her life. She did not want the new puppy. She wanted that one, the one no one had chosen before.
Her parents watched her rest her head on the dog’s back and understood there was no turning back. She knew, without anyone having to explain it to her, that this dog had not received much love in his life. And she decided to be the first to give it to him.
