“PLAYING PARENTS” IN MISERY: THE CASE THAT EXPOSES THE FAILURE OF THE FAMILY ENVIRONMEN
The news of a 12-year-old girl giving birth to a premature baby in an environment of extreme poverty is not an isolated incident, but the symptom of a society that has failed its children. In a forgotten corner of Latin America, this teenage couple tried to do the impossible: build a family when they themselves still need to be cared for.
A shelter of cardboard and false hope
The couple went viral not only because of the mother’s age, but because of the photos of their “home.” A space built with leftover wood, plastic sheets to block the wind, and no basic services. There, in absolute deprivation, they intended to raise a newborn who, being premature, required intensive medical care that their surroundings could never provide.
Negligence or fate?
The controversy erupts when looking back: the abandonment by these minors’ parents is the central point of the criticism. Child rights experts point out that a pregnancy at 12 years old is, technically, the result of abuse or, at the very least, systemic negligence. “We cannot romanticize these children’s effort; what we are seeing is the result of the absence of education and adult supervision,” say social workers who followed the case.
How did the story end?
After the case went viral, local authorities intervened. The baby was transferred to neonatal care to stabilize his health, while the teenagers were placed under social assistance programs. However, the damage is already done: the childhood of these two young people came to a halt to make way for a forced adulthood for which no one seems willing to take responsibility.
