Rene Lima-Marin was 20 years old when he robbed two video stores at gunpoint in Aurora, Colorado. A judge sentenced him to 98 years in prison, one after another, with no possibility of the sentences running concurrently.
Something went wrong in the paperwork. In 2008, a court employee recorded his sentences as concurrent instead of consecutive, and the system let him out 90 years earlier than he should have been released. No one noticed for nearly six years. Rene got a job as a glazier, bought a house, married Jasmine, and started a family with two children.
In 2014, someone reviewed the file and found the error. They sent him back to prison to serve the remainder of a sentence he had already begun to leave behind. His case ended up before an Arapahoe County judge, who in 2017 decided that time had already done its part.
