This adorable bird looks like a snowball with wings

It looks like it’s made of cotton, but the long-tailed tit is one of the most endearing birds there is. It lives in the cold forests of Europe and Asia, and its round, fluffy body is no accident: those tiny feathers are its coat against the ice.

What will move you most is how it lives. In groups, always. They weave nests with moss, lichens, feathers, and spiderwebs, so flexible that they stretch as the chicks grow inside, as if the home were breathing along with them.

And there’s something else: when an adult loses its own nest, it doesn’t give up or fly away. It stays to help feed and protect another pair’s young, as if the whole community were one single family. Scientists point to it as one of the most remarkable acts of cooperation among wild birds. Tiny in size, enormous in heart.
