Christian McPhilamy was just 6 years old when he saw a St. Jude’s commercial about children who lost their hair to cancer. That day, in Florida, he made a decision he would stick with for the next two years: to grow out his blond hair until he could donate it.
What came next was not easy. Classmates, coaches, and even adults mocked him relentlessly. They called him a girl and asked why he did not just cut his hair already. Christian never gave full explanations. He simply kept growing his hair, strand by strand, while the teasing around him never stopped.
At 8 years old, he fulfilled what he had promised. He cut four 10-inch ponytails and donated them to the organization Children With Hair Loss, which makes free wigs for children facing illnesses such as cancer. The very thing that made him a target of teasing ended up being the reason other children can now look in the mirror with a smile.
