Casper was 20 months old and weighed just 38 kilos when a pack of 11 coyotes surrounded the pen in Decatur, Georgia.
Inside were Daisy, his pregnant companion, and the flock of sheep he had cared for since he was a puppy. He killed three coyotes inside the enclosure, jumped a fence more than a meter high, and chased the rest across the field. By the time he was done, he had taken down eight of the 11.
Then he disappeared for two days. His owners believed he was still tracking the remaining coyotes. They found him with torn skin and injuries so severe that the veterinarian doubted he would survive. He lost his tail, but he survived. A year later, he won the People’s Choice Pup with more than 100,000 votes.
