Kris never thought his uterus would be where he would start his own family.
He is a trans man, one of Norway’s pioneers in legally transitioning, in a country that until 2016 required mandatory sterilization to do so. Kris underwent years of testosterone and gender-affirming surgeries, but kept his healthy uterus. Together with his partners, Sindre and David, he decided to use it to carry the trio’s first child through in vitro fertilization.
The Norwegian documentary Tre fedre (Fatherhood) followed them throughout the entire process: the surprised looks in the gynecologist’s office, the hormones, the birth, the first sleepless nights. No speeches, just three men learning to become fathers together. When filming ended, the story continued: today there are five at home, with a second baby conceived in the same way.
