Striking medical images have gone viral after showing the before and after of a patient who underwent surgery for advanced syndactyly, a congenital condition in which two or more fingers remain joined from birth.
In this case, the malformation was especially complex, since not only did the skin keep the fingers joined, but there was also a bony fusion, making highly specialized surgery necessary.
The photographs show the result just 45 days after the operation. What was once a hand with completely fused fingers now shows almost total separation, allowing for progressive recovery of mobility and functionality.
Syndactyly is one of the most common congenital malformations of the hand. It can affect only the skin or involve muscles, tendons, and even bones, as occurred in this patient. Depending on the severity, treatment usually consists of reconstructive surgery to separate the fingers and improve both function and quality of life.
Although the recovery process can last several months, the published images show remarkable progress in a very short time, which is why thousands of people were surprised by the result.
