“This is how all the cities in the world should be”: Japan installs official traffic signs to protect stray cats

On some streets in Japan, a yellow sign stops traffic with a small, silent silhouette: that of a cat. 🐈‍⬛

It is not urban art or decoration. They are official signs installed in neighborhoods where stray felines are cared for by residents and are part of the everyday landscape. Japan has more than 160 variations of animal warning signs, and in certain corners, the cat is the one featured on the sign.

Many celebrate this as an example of empathy turned into urban design 💚. Others ask whether it makes sense to allocate public resources to protect ownerless animals when there are more urgent problems. Meanwhile, on those streets, the cats keep crossing — unhurried, ownerless, but with a story. Should something like this exist in your city?
