“This is not normal, humans always come first”: the debate sparked by the study on who matters more to us, people or animals

Your dog stares at you when you’re sad. It doesn’t judge, doesn’t ask for explanations, it’s just there. And there’s science behind that.

A study from Northeastern University revealed something uncomfortable: 40% of people would choose to save their dog before a stranger in danger. The researchers showed descriptions of violence against different victims —a puppy, an adult dog, a baby, and an adult— and measured the emotional response. The result surprised even the scientists themselves. 🐾

For some, this reflects legitimate and deep bonds; for others, a sign that something is wrong with our empathy toward other humans. What does it say about us to love our pets more than people we don’t know?
