Kugen was born without eyes.
He was found alone on a road in Hebei, China, in 2022, and has lived under the care of Mr. Zhu ever since. For months, Mr. Zhu watched him bump into walls, trees, and furniture until he learned to get around using only his hearing and sense of smell. Today, he is 3 years old and has a routine that moves thousands on social media: whenever it’s time for a treat, his companion Xiao Huang doesn’t eat.
Wait. Let Kugen approach first, find the treat, and take it. Only then, when his friend is already satisfied, does Xiao Huang accept his own. No one taught him that gesture—he repeats it on his own, without anyone asking him to, as if he understood that his companion needs that first turn more than he does.
