Charlie Hammerton was 25 when the world came crashing down around him three times in a row.
In 2017, he lost his birth mother, Jan, who died from motor neurone disease. Months later, Will Moss, his best friend, died at 22. Before the year was over, his adoptive mother, Samantha, died of a heart attack. Three bereavements, one person, twelve months.
Instead of sinking into despair, Charlie left his job in the Royal Air Force, sold his three cars and almost everything he owned. With the 15,000 pounds he had saved, he bought a camper for 5,000 and in February 2018 set off from Edinburgh with Bandit, the ferret he had rescued three years earlier from a sanctuary. Eight months and 11 countries later — from the Arctic Circle to southern Italy — Bandit died just one week after returning to England. Charlie wrote a book about that journey that kept them together until the end.
