On February 10, 2008, Amy Winehouse was not at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. She was in London, in front of a screen, connected via satellite because her visa to enter the United States had been denied. Even so, that night she took home 5 of the 6 Grammys for which she was nominated, becoming the first British woman to achieve it in a single ceremony. 🎶
She won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance — all thanks to “Rehab” and her album Back to Black, which was already one of the best-selling in UK history. Her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, remained imprisoned in a London jail while she accepted the awards from home. 🖤

When she was asked whether so much recognition surprised her, her response was unexpectedly honest: “I wasn’t surprised to win the Grammy. What surprised me was Tony Bennett saying my name”. That humility, coming from someone who had just broken a historic record, is perhaps the most Amy Winehouse thing about the whole story. ✨
