Karla Homolka was released from prison in 2005 with a sentence that never matched what she had actually done.

She signed a 12-year deal for two homicide charges in exchange for testifying against Paul Bernardo, her partner in a series of crimes against three victims. The tapes recorded by the couple themselves came to light later and showed that her role was much more active than she had claimed. By then, the plea deal was already sealed and could not be reversed.

After her release, she married Thierry Bordelais, the brother of her former lawyer Sylvie Bordelais. They had three children and lived for a time in Guadeloupe under the name Leanne Bordelais. When the family returned to Quebec, Karla appeared as a volunteer at her children’s school. It only took someone recognizing her face for her past to erupt again in the community.
