She studied laws she could never read with her eyes… and still beat everyone 👀
Thanya Nathan C was born unable to see. In Kannur, India, she learned to read with her fingers before learning to read with her eyes.
Braille in primary school, screen-reading software at university, because there were hardly any law books adapted for her.
That is how she studied every code, every judgment, every article of law: listening to what others can only look at.
She graduated in 2024 and began litigating under the guidance of lawyer K G Sunilkumar in Thaliparamba.
While defending civil and criminal cases by day, at night she prepared for Kerala’s most competitive judicial exam.
She took it in 2025 and came first on the merit list for people with disabilities, a quota that has existed only since India’s Supreme Court enabled it that same year.
Today she awaits the letter that will make her, at 24, the first blind woman to serve on a court in Kerala.
