“I thought I’d drunk too much wine”: Woman blamed a hangover for her blurred vision, but ended up losing an eye to a tumor

Jade Windley couldn’t see the dancers.

She was at a friend’s house watching a Beyoncé concert on TV when she noticed something was wrong. The 28-year-old, who lives in Sheffield, England, explained it with a familiar bit of logic: she’d probably drunk too much wine the night before, and sleeping it off would fix things. But the problem was still there. On a friend’s advice, she took a retinal detachment test and ended up at an optician’s, where she was offered a 3D scan of the back of her eye. “I thought it was silly; I’d just been drinking wine”, she recalled.

The result changed everything: she was told to go to the emergency department immediately. There, she learned she had a benign tumor in her right eye. She underwent six eye injections, steroid treatment, and radiotherapy in October 2025, but in March 2026 a second non-cancerous tumor appeared, and doctors decided to remove her eye, which could no longer see and was causing her pain and vomiting. The operation took place on August 5.

She is now wearing an ocular conformer while she waits for her prosthesis, and her advice is clear: if she hadn’t gone to the optician’s that day, she might not have found out for months or years.
