Das, Summer, and Olivia don’t know they’re heroes. They only know how to run.

In Chile, where wildfires have devoured kilometers of native forest, ecologist Francisca Torres had an idea that sounded almost naïve: train border collies to reforest. She fitted them with special backpacks loaded with native seeds and let them loose to run among the ashes. Each step these three dogs took released small doses of life, imitating what nature does on its own, but much faster.

What would have taken years of human labor —sowing by hand, area by area— these three dogs accomplished in hours of running. Francisca leads Pewos, a group that believes animals can be active allies in conservation, not just symbols of it.

Today, where there was once only black earth, green shoots are beginning to emerge. And it all began because someone believed that three happy dogs could rebuild a forest.
