For years, Oren, Alon, and Tal Alexander were luxury real estate agents who sold mansions in New York and Miami. On Tuesday, a federal court in Manhattan sentenced each of them to 30 years in prison for drugging and raping women as part of a sex trafficking network.

Prosecutors had sought life sentences. Judge Valerie Caproni described them as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: men who loved their children and, at the same time, were “sadistic, misogynistic sexual predators.” She said their conduct was “monstrous,” but that she did not consider them beyond redemption, and therefore rejected life sentences. According to Telemundo 51, they used their wealth and access to luxury properties to attack dozens of women.

Statements from 11 victims were read at the hearing. Maya Miller said of her rape by Tal Alexander: “I carry a silent funeral inside me.” According to the AP, many of the women present seemed disappointed, because the sentences would allow the brothers to leave prison around retirement age. The defense, which maintains that all three are innocent, announced that it would appeal.
