Cara lives at the Tierart sanctuary in Massweiler, Germany. She arrived there after authorities rescued her from a private property in Mugnano, Italy, where someone kept her as if she were just another pet.
In 2019, a veterinary check-up revealed something urgent: one of her fangs was damaged inside, with cracks reaching all the way to the root. The damage occurred after Cara broke the fang while playing with one of her toys. If it broke completely, the pain would be unbearable.
That is why the sanctuary team called in specialists from Denmark and Dr. Johanna Painer from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, who traveled to Germany twice: first to take an exact mold of the tooth, then to install the final piece using special glue and ultraviolet light. The result was a gold crown carved to fit her fang.
Biologist Eva Lindenschmidt said that Cara spent several days licking her new tooth because it felt strange to her, and that as a precaution they gave her boneless meat while she got used to it.
